I have some good friends who are planning on leaving me (and the country) for a month or so, and they have been trying to delegate their responsibilities out to others so everything is taken care of while they're gone. I volunteered to do a few things while they are gone. One of the things I'll be helping out with is Shop Good, a once-a-month conglomeration of nonprofit and goodwill organizations selling products and using the proceeds to better the world (help orphans, free women, aid refugees, raise awareness, something like that). My friends sell merchandise from all over the world (really cool stuff too) and they design and screen print their own tee-shirts with cool, artsy designs. I happen to own at least 5 of them, and love love LOVE them! Anyway, since they will be gone next Friday, I followed them around yesterday learning all they were doing to put this thing together and what I need to be in charge of doing next week.
We got there at like 10:30 in the morning, and the event didn't start until 7 that night. I thought we were way too early. I was WAY off. We worked all the way up through 7:00 and then obviously worked throughout the event, which officially ended at 11. We were cleaned up and on our way home at midnight, which made for a really long day!
The other organizations we are working with are pretty amazing. Not only do their causes do a lot of good in the world, but the people who run them are really cool! To be honest, I haven't gotten to know too many people in the city. I just recently decided I would be staying in OKC for awhile, so I've only recently started looking for connections outside of work. It can be so easy to just hang out on campus and only know the people you live and work with (which in my case are the same), never branching out to get to know the rest of the city. I'm really glad I'm getting to meet people around here, though, because I'm seeing the vastness of God's power, work and love! It's so strange, I meet people in all different walks of life from all different denominational backgrounds, and so many of them are learning the same things I think God is teaching me right now! It's encouraging and exciting to see this, because it makes me think God is planning something big and exciting for His people, and I'm ready to see it!
Ok, so the people are great, and I really look forward to getting to know them all better. I also was introduced to this cute little gluten-free, vegetarian cafe down the street from where we were setting up our market. They have gluten-free pizzas, quesadillas, sandwiches, cookies, cakes, and a few other things, I think. I don't have a gluten allergy, but my friend does, as do my sister-in-law and niece. It was a really cute little place, although the decor was a little strange. Calming earth tones with a bit of an Asian influence in one area, then tacky little cherub figurines, brightly-colored flowers, and cheesy inspirational words on the walls. One of the really unique things about this place is the "seeker room" they've put in. Its walls are painted with symbols of various religions - Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, etc. From the best I can figure, it's a room for meditation and seeking truth. Although it's not completely walled-in (the back wall is missing, leaving no real sound barrier between the seeker room and the rest of the cafe.
Funny story for the day - I went to this cafe for dinner and ordered two pieces of pizza to go. The lady behind the desk told me they had one piece ready, but the other pizza would take about 15 more minutes to cook. I said that was fine and I'd come back. About 15 minutes later, my friend volunteered to go back down and get both of our foods. I also asked her if she'd pick me up a couple of cookies. She comes back 5-10 minutes later, laughing. Apparently, right as my friend walked in, the lady was taking out the pizza. But as she turned to put it on a cooling rack, she hit the pizza on the oven and it fell onto the floor. So it was going to be another half hour for the pizza. Then when she went to buy the cookies, they were out of ones, so I got a five, a roll of nickels, and another handful of nickels. I found the whole thing hilarious, especially because when I did go back half an hour later, they totally didn't remember me or my pizza and I ended up waiting for another 10 minutes until they almost charged me again for the pizza! I wasn't ever really frustrated, but it was really funny, and a perfect story to round out a really great day.
