That said, I hate New Years' resolutions. Who actually sticks to them? Let's be honest with ourselves. Lots of people are in love with the beginning of a year and the possibilities, but they're less enchanted when it comes to making those possibilities a reality. Once we re-realize that making changes requires work discipline and courage, we usually shrink back into our holes and settle for things the way they've always been. Take, for example, the "I'll lose weight this year" epidemic. Hands down the most popular New Year's resolution, but America still has boatloads of fat people who are unhappy about their weight (granted there are also fat people who are happy about their weight. Don't be offended if you fall into this category, I don't assume that just because you're fat you are unhappy about being fat. If you're fat and happy, good for you! Dang, we have to be so PC these days!) But becoming not fat takes work (either that or an obscene amount of money...but even that takes work for upkeep after your surgery). And as appealing as the idea of slipping into a size two bikini in 6 months sounds, the appeal of not going to the gym every day, the appeal of not sweating and smelling profusely, the appeal of a pair of sweats and a gallon of ice cream, the appeal of not being the crazy girl who passes on the cake and opts for a celery stick (and thus has to endure the "Oh come on, you know you want it! Just one little piece. It's a special day! Oh, this cake is so good! You don't know what you're missing. Just eat it!), yes this appeal is much greater. And the battle of the deadly sins comes quickly to an end on January 15th, as sloth beats vanity into submission once more.
But I think that this year will be different! :)
